Trip details

Fontainebleau is 180 km / 112 mi from Reims via the A5, a 2 hr drive with no major congestion. The château is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the residence of the kings of France from François I to Napoleon III. It is an elegant alternative to Versailles, far less crowded, yet with interiors every bit as prestigious. The surrounding forest is known across Europe for its bouldering and hiking, and the town is home to the INSEAD business school.

Drop-off zones : The château de Fontainebleau (cour des Adieux), the visitor car park, the forest (Apremont and Bas-Bréau bouldering sites), the town of Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau-Avon station and the INSEAD campus.

Recommendation : Fontainebleau is calmer than Versailles: shorter queues and a more intimate atmosphere. For bouldering or hiking, plan a full day with the driver at your disposal so you can reach the forest sites and be collected in the evening.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Reims to Fontainebleau trip?

About 2 hr via the A5, with no major congestion. Expect some slowdown on the approach on summer weekends.

How is it different from Versailles?

Less crowded and more intimate, with more modest gardens but interiors every bit as prestigious. A great choice if you have already seen Versailles.

Can you drop climbers directly at the forest sites?

Yes. The forest car parks (Bas-Bréau, Cuvier, Apremont) are accessible, and we drop climbers with their gear.

Can we combine it with Vaux-le-Vicomte?

Yes, the château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is 30 min from Fontainebleau. We quote a two-château day on request.

Do you handle INSEAD admission days?

Yes, we run frequent transfers for candidates, with drop-off on the INSEAD campus and waiting time if needed.

Is there a round-trip day rate?

Yes. We quote with waiting on site; a €480 (~$540 USD) full-day package works out better than two separate transfers.
