Down into the crayères of Reims

A half day from Reims in the old chalk quarries of Saint-Nicaise Hill, which became the cellars of a great Champagne house. You see Champagne aging in the dark, taste it at the end of the tour, and your chauffeur drives you back.

  • 4 hoursor the full day

  • €280 (~$315 USD)the half day, by sedan

First a quarry, then a cellar

A crayère is an old chalk quarry. Starting in Gallo-Roman times, and above all in the Middle Ages, stone was cut out of Saint-Nicaise Hill to build the city and its walls. The quarrymen dug pits that were narrow at the surface and wide at the bottom, like upside-down funnels. Some are more than 30 meters (about 100 feet) high.

The first Champagne house moved onto the hill in 1768, and others followed. They linked the old quarries with miles of galleries, because chalk gives a bottle everything it needs to age: 10 to 12°C (50 to 54°F) all year round, humidity, and no light at all. In 2015, UNESCO added the hill to its World Heritage list, along with the hillsides and cellars of Champagne.

This tour is about one house, and time underground. For the half day, we book a great house whose crayères are open to visitors, and you taste at an easy pace. The full day adds a second visit and lunch.

The half day, from the gate to the tasting

A typical half day, starting at 2 pm. The full day follows the same plan, with a second visit and lunch added.

  1. 2:00 pmReims

    Pickup at your address

Your chauffeur picks you up at your hotel, the train station or wherever you are staying. Saint-Nicaise Hill is on the southeast side of the city, about ten minutes from downtown.

  2. 2:15 pmSaint-Nicaise Hill

    What the hill hides

The hill is named after a Gothic abbey church begun in 1231. Sold off during the French Revolution, the church was itself used as a stone quarry, and nothing of it is left above ground. Under the streets and gardens, the crayères are still there. Your chauffeur drops you off at the gate of the house.

  3. 2:30 pmA great house

Down the stairs, into the galleries

A guide from the house leads the way, or an audio guide if you choose the self-guided tour. A few steps down, the temperature drops and the walls turn white. The galleries lead to the old quarries, tall pointed chambers that rise toward the former opening of the pit, past thousands of bottles stacked to age or tilted neck-down in wooden riddling racks. The tour lasts one to two hours depending on the option, tasting included.

  4. 3:45 pmA great house

    The tasting

The tour ends with a tasting, in the cellar or in one of the house’s reception rooms. Before we book, we tell you how many Champagnes are poured, how long the tour lasts and what language it is given in.

  5. 4:30 pmCathedral square

    A stop at the cathedral

If you like, your chauffeur drops you off in front of the cathedral, ten minutes from the hill. Admission is free, and the cathedral has also been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.

  6. 6:00 pmReims

    Drop-off wherever you like

The half day ends where you choose: your hotel, the train station or the restaurant where you are having dinner.

Times are approximate: each house sets its own time slots, and we build the day around them.

From Paris

The full day from your Paris hotel

It takes about two hours to drive from central Paris to Reims: for a single cellar, that would mean four hours on the highway. The day trip from Paris, at €1040 (~$1165 USD) per vehicle by sedan, leaves time for the crayères, lunch and a second visit.

Questions we often get

Are the crayères really Roman?

Partly. Chalk was first cut from the hill in Gallo-Roman times, but most of it was quarried in the Middle Ages, to build the city and its walls. The Champagne houses only moved their cellars there starting in 1768. Our guide to Roman Reims tells what the city keeps from that era, from the Porte de Mars to the first vineyards.

Whose cellars will we go down into?

Those of a great house on Saint-Nicaise Hill whose crayères are open to visitors. We choose it when you book, based on what is open on your date and in your language, and confirm it in writing with the time. If it has no slot, we suggest another visit before you confirm.

How is this different from the Champagne Discovery Tour?

The Champagne Discovery Tour pairs a great house with a grower, to compare two ways of making Champagne. Here, the half day stays with one house and its crayères: more time underground, a single tasting, and the cathedral on the way back if you like.

Is it cold down there, and are there a lot of stairs?

It is 10 to 12°C (50 to 54°F) all year round, so bring a jacket, even in July. The staircase often has about a hundred steps, and the floor can be damp. If someone in your group cannot manage stairs, let us know: we check access with the house before we send you the plan.

How do we book?

Send us the date, the number of guests and your pickup address, through the form or by phone. We reply within 2 hours during the day with the plan and the fixed price. Your booking is confirmed once you sign the quote.

How do we pay?

By card (secure payment link) or by bank transfer, when you book. We do not take cash. We can issue the invoice in your company’s name.

What languages do your chauffeurs speak?

Our chauffeurs speak French and English. A Japanese-speaking guide is available on request, at extra cost.

What if we need to cancel?

Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup. Between 48 and 24 hours, half the price is due, and the full price after that. The houses have their own cancellation terms for their tours. Details are on our cancellation and refund page.
