The cathedral of kings, then the chalk cellars

A full day in Reims, from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. In the morning, the cathedral where twenty-five kings were crowned, and Saint-Remi Basilica; in the afternoon, the cellars dug into the chalk beneath the city. Your chauffeur drives you from one stop to the next and tells you along the way what ties them together.

  • 9:30 amto 5:00 pm, all within Reims
  • 25 kingscrowned here, from 1223 to 1825
  • €560 (~$625 USD)per vehicle, by sedan

One city, two stories

Clovis, king of the Franks, was baptized in Reims around the year 500 by Bishop Remi, and that baptism earned the city a privilege: this is where the kings of France were crowned. Twenty-five coronations took place in the present cathedral, from Louis VIII in 1223 to Charles X in 1825. In 1429, Joan of Arc brought Charles VII here. The holy oil for the coronation was kept at the Abbey of Saint-Remi, in a small flask called the Holy Ampulla, and carried to the cathedral on the day of the ceremony.

Beneath the city, chalk was quarried from Gallo-Roman times on, and above all in the Middle Ages, and the Champagne houses turned those quarries into their cellars. During World War I, Reims was only a few miles from the front line. The cathedral burned in September 1914, and many families went to live in the cellars, where classes were held too.

Everything happens in Reims: no highway, just short drives, and time to sit down for lunch.

A typical day in Reims

How the day runs Monday through Saturday. On Sundays the order changes: see the questions below.

  1. 9:30 amReims

    Leaving the hotel

Your chauffeur picks you up at your hotel or your address. A few minutes later, you are standing on the square in front of the cathedral.

  2. 9:45 amNotre-Dame de Reims

    The coronation cathedral

Admission is free. The facade, the nave, the stained glass: allow an hour at your own pace. With a licensed guide, the visit takes an hour and a half to two hours, and we push back the rest of the morning.

  3. 11:00 amSaint-Remi Basilica

    The tomb of Saint Remi

Five minutes away by car, a church that is largely Romanesque, consecrated in 1049 and built around the tomb of the bishop who baptized Clovis. Quieter than the cathedral, and free to enter. During Mass, worship takes priority over visits.

  4. 12:15 pmCity center

    Lunch downtown

A brasserie in the center of town, chosen to suit your tastes and booked in your name. You pay for the meal at the restaurant. Allow an hour and a half.

  5. 2:00 pmA great house

    The city beneath the city

The main cellar tour, beneath Saint-Nicaise Hill: the stairs, the chalk galleries, the bottles aging in the dark, then a tasting. Between 1914 and 1918, these cellars sheltered the people of Reims. Allow an hour and a half to two hours.

  6. 4:00 pmA second house

    A smaller cellar

A smaller house, to compare with the first: a different scale, a different style. We only book it if it has a slot on your date, and we suggest it to you before you confirm. Allow forty-five minutes.

  7. 5:00 pmReims

    Back to the hotel

Your chauffeur drops you off at your hotel in the late afternoon, with time to rest before dinner.

Times are approximate: each house sets its own time slots, and we build the day around them.

The angel, the kings and Chagall

Three details to find in the cathedral before you leave.

  • West facade

    The Smiling Angel

On the left-hand portal. Its head broke off in the fire of September 19, 1914; the pieces were gathered up, and the angel got its face back in 1926.

  • Top of the facade

    The Gallery of Kings

A row of stone kings runs along the very top of the facade. In the center, Saint Remi baptizes Clovis, the event that made Reims the city of coronations.

  • Axial chapel

    The Chagall windows

Three stained-glass windows designed by Marc Chagall and installed in 1974, at the far end of the cathedral. On one of them, Clovis again, nearly fifteen centuries later.

Questions we often get

Is the cathedral visit guided?

Not by default: admission is free and you explore at your own pace. If you would like commentary, we book a licensed guide for an hour and a half to two hours, at €200 (~$225 USD), in French or English, except on Sundays and public holidays.

Can we do this day on a Sunday?

Yes, in a different order. On Sunday mornings the cathedral holds Mass, so we start with the cellars and keep the cathedral for the afternoon. The licensed guide is not available that day, and not every house opens on Sundays: we check which ones do on your date.

Will we see the Palais du Tau?

No. The former archbishops’ palace, where the king stayed and the coronation banquet was held, is closed for renovation; it is expected to reopen around the end of 2027. We will not add it to the program until that date is confirmed.

Aren’t two cellars in one day too many?

For some people, yes. Tell us when you book: we drop the second one, and you get more time at lunch or in the cathedral. The price of the day stays the same.

How much walking is involved?

Some. You walk through both churches and through the galleries, and you take the stairs down into each cellar. If someone in your group has trouble with steps, tell us when you book: we ask each house and, if needed, keep only one cellar.

How do we book?

Send us the date, the number of guests and your pickup address, through the form or by phone. We reply within 2 hours during the day with the plan and the fixed price. Your booking is confirmed once you sign the quote.

How do we pay?

By card (secure payment link) or by bank transfer, when you book. We do not take cash. We can issue the invoice in your company’s name.

What languages do your chauffeurs speak?

Our chauffeurs speak French and English. A Japanese-speaking guide is available on request, at extra cost.

What if we need to cancel?

Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup. Between 48 and 24 hours, half the price is due, and the full price after that. The houses have their own cancellation terms for their tours. Details are on our cancellation and refund page.
