Reims or Épernay: Which to Choose for Champagne

The grand houses of Reims or the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay? How to choose for a day trip from Paris, and why a private driver lets you do both.

7 min read Updated July 4, 2026

The two capitals of Champagne sit just 26 km / 16 mi apart, yet they feel like different worlds. Reims brings the grand houses, a UNESCO cathedral and a real city to explore; Épernay lines its Champagne along a single legendary avenue, right at the edge of the vines. Here is how to choose between them for a day trip from Paris, and why, with a private driver, you rarely have to choose at all.

Context

Two capitals, 26 km / 16 mi apart

Reims and Épernay are the two hearts of Champagne, and the rivalry is friendly but real. Reims is the larger city, home to most of the historic maisons and the cathedral where the kings of France were crowned. Épernay is smaller, quieter and more scenic, built around one street where the greatest names in Champagne stand shoulder to shoulder above 110 km / 68 mi of cellars.

They are only 26 km / 16 mi apart, about 25 to 30 minutes by road through the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims. That single fact changes everything: the honest answer to « Reims or Épernay » is often « both », and the only thing standing between you and both is transport. Three questions really decide it: how much time you have, whether you want a city or the vines, and how you plan to get around once you arrive.

The city

Reims

Reims is the grand address of Champagne. The historic houses sit inside the city, many of them a short drive apart, above the Gallo-Roman chalk cellars that earned UNESCO World Heritage status. You can pair a tasting with a genuine city break: the cathedral, the cafes, the brasseries and the museums.

What Reims does best

  • The grand houses in town: Veuve Clicquot, Taittinger, Pommery, Ruinart, Mumm and Lanson are all in Reims, most with polished visitor experiences and English-speaking guides.
  • Notre-Dame de Reims: the coronation cathedral, a UNESCO masterpiece of Gothic architecture, five minutes from the main houses.
  • The crayères: the chalk pits dug in Gallo-Roman times, now cathedral-like cellars beneath the Saint-Nicaise hill. See our Crayères UNESCO tour.
  • City comfort: the best choice of restaurants, hotels and after-tasting dining in the whole region.
  • Easy from Paris: 45 minutes by TGV to Reims Center, the fastest arrival in Champagne.

Reims suits you if

You want famous names, a walkable city, a cathedral and a proper lunch, all in one place, and the shortest possible trip from Paris. It is the classic first visit to Champagne. For a full hour-by-hour plan, see our One day in Reims itinerary.

The avenue

Épernay and its Avenue de Champagne

Épernay is smaller and more intimate, and it plays a different card: the Avenue de Champagne, often called the world's most expensive street because of the treasure ageing beneath it. In a few hundred meters you pass the gates of Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, Pol Roger, Mercier and De Castellane, with the vineyards rising straight out of town.

What Épernay does best

  • The Avenue de Champagne: the greatest maisons within a short stroll, above 110 km / 68 mi of cellars. Visit Moët & Chandon, the largest house of all.
  • Closer to the vines: a more rural, wine-country feel than Reims, with Grand Cru villages minutes away.
  • Hautvillers next door: the abbey village where Dom Pérignon worked, 6 km up the hill, the spiritual home of Champagne.
  • A calmer pace: fewer crowds, an intimate scale, ideal for a slower, more scenic day.

Épernay suits you if

You care more about the wine and the landscape than about a city, you have already seen Reims, or you want the postcard of the Avenue de Champagne and the vineyards behind it. Our Avenue de Champagne tour is built around exactly this day.

Neither is « better »: Reims is the city of the grand houses, Épernay is the avenue of the vines. Many travelers who can only pick one choose Reims first, then come back for Épernay.

The real answer

Why not both in one day

Because the two towns are only 25 to 30 minutes apart, the choice is often a false one. With a private driver, a comfortable day looks like this: a morning house and the cathedral in Reims, lunch, then the Avenue de Champagne and a second tasting in Épernay in the afternoon, with the drive through the vineyards as the scenic bridge between them.

This is precisely what public transport cannot do. Trains link Paris to each town, but not the two towns to each other on a tourist's schedule, and taxis on demand are scarce and costly. A chauffeur handles the timing between appointments, the country roads and the tastings, so you keep both glasses and skip the logistics. See how it works on our private Champagne tours.

Logistics

Getting there from Paris

The two towns are not equally easy to reach, and that often tips the decision.

  • Reims: 45 minutes by TGV from Paris Est, up to 30 trains a day. The simplest self-guided day trip.
  • Épernay: around 1 hr 15 by direct regional train from Paris Est, fewer departures. Reachable, but slower and less flexible.
  • Both in a day by train: awkward. You would arrive in one town and still need local transport to reach the houses, then cover the 26 km / 16 mi between the two.
  • Flying in: from Paris CDG, there is no direct train to the vineyards. A private transfer from CDG to Reims is the natural way in, and it can begin the tour on the way.

The practical takeaway: Reims is the easy pick if you travel by train and want a fast, self-guided day. The moment you want Épernay too, or both, a private driver from Paris or from Reims turns a complicated puzzle into a single booking.

Recommendation

Which to choose, by traveler

First time in Champagne

Reims. The famous names, the cathedral and the crayères in a walkable city, 45 minutes from Paris. The complete introduction.

Serious wine lover

Épernay, or better, both. The Avenue de Champagne, Hautvillers and the Grand Cru villages reward a slower, vine-focused day.

Been to Reims before

Épernay. The natural second chapter, with a completely different atmosphere.

Group of 4 to 7

Both, by private van. One booking, pickup at your hotel, Reims in the morning and Épernay after lunch, no train timetables to juggle.

Romantic or special occasion

Épernay for the scenery and Hautvillers, or a two-town day for the full picture. A chauffeur means everyone can raise a glass.

FAQ

Reims or Épernay: your common questions

Reims or Épernay for a first day trip from Paris?

Reims. It is 45 minutes from Paris by TGV, the grand houses are in the city, and you get the cathedral and the UNESCO crayères in the same visit. Épernay makes a wonderful second trip, or an afternoon added to Reims with a driver.

Can you really do both Reims and Épernay in one day?

Yes. They are only 26 km / 16 mi apart, about 25 to 30 minutes by road. With a private driver, a morning in Reims and an afternoon in Épernay is a comfortable, unhurried day.

How far is Reims from Épernay?

About 26 km / 16 mi through the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car.

Which one has more to do?

Reims offers more variety, houses, cathedral, museums and dining in a real city. Épernay is more concentrated, the Avenue de Champagne and the surrounding vineyards, which many find more atmospheric.

Is Épernay worth it if I have already seen Reims?

Very much so. The Avenue de Champagne, Moët & Chandon and nearby Hautvillers give a different, more rural side of Champagne that Reims does not.

Do I need a car to visit Épernay?

Not to reach the town, but the best of Épernay, Hautvillers, the Grand Cru villages and combining it with Reims, is far easier with a private driver than by train and taxi.
