Founded in 1858, the Pommery estate bears the mark of Louise Pommery, who created the first brut champagne in 1874. You first cross a neo-Elizabethan surface estate, then descend the 116 steps that drop about thirty meters into eighteen kilometers of Gallo-Roman chalk cellars listed by UNESCO. Each year the cellars host a contemporary-art exhibition, in the spirit of the giant cask carved by Emile Galle.
The Pommery crayères are old chalk quarries dug in Gallo-Roman times, from about the 4th century, to build the city of Reims. On its own website the house counts more than sixty of these pits, linked by more than eighteen kilometers of galleries. As you go down the 116 steps, you pass from the neo-Elizabethan estate to a Roman quarry that became a cellar.

Do you climb down the 116 steps? Is it wheelchair-accessible?
You descend a staircase of 116 steps to reach the cellars, about thirty meters underground. If anyone in your party has reduced mobility, tell us: we check access with the house before booking. As the cellars stay cool year-round (10 to 12 degrees), bring a jacket.
What makes the Pommery estate distinctive?

Is the cellar tour itself included in the price?
No. Our price covers the chauffeur, the vehicle and the booking. The tour, tasting and any boutique purchases are paid directly to the Champagne house. Book ahead if you can, especially from May to October.
How long does a typical tour last?
Depending on the house and the formula chosen, plan 1 to 2 hours on site (cellar tour + tasting). Your chauffeur waits for you and drives you to the next house: two houses fit in a half-day, three with lunch in a full day.
Which vehicle for how many passengers?
Mercedes C-Class, GLE or Tesla for 1 to 3 passengers (2 suitcases + 2 cabin bags in trunk). Mercedes V-Class van for 4 to 7 passengers (more generous luggage space). All our vehicles are recent, air-conditioned, with mineral water and USB chargers available.
